BELLEVUE, WA – November 18, 2009 – Changes to Google’s algorithm used to be large events, but have toned down over the years as Google has moved from making changes quarterly down to a daily routine. However, there is a major update coming soon called Google Caffeine that every site owner should pay attention to.
Rather than an actual algorithm change, Google Caffeine is an infrastructure change that allows Google to crawl and index sites faster and deeper. As the name implies, Caffeine is about speed, but it also gives Google some flexibility in adjusting the algorithm-even within niches.
How Will Google Caffeine Affect My Site?
Until it is rolled out, it is difficult to say. The good news is that it won’t happen before the holiday season, as in years past. As a surprise to most, Google announced that Caffeine is ready, but they will wait until after the holidays to roll out Caffeine except on one server (so some users may see the new results). Once the new data set is rolled out, some sites will immediately see changes in their rankings and others will feel the effects over a longer period of time.
In the search engine optimization (SEO) community, many expect further strength in the Vince update (an algorithm change earlier this year that favored large brand sites) and more rapid algorithm changes, meaning successful SEO strategies will favor more holistic approaches. Other rumors are that Google will feature fresher content.
What Should I Do?
No one knows for sure what Google Caffeine has in store, but we’ll be watching the changes very closely. Google Caffeine serves as a good reminder that SEO best practices constantly change. If you haven’t had an SEO audit in the past six months or a year, it is worth consideration.
